Athletics at Saint Augustine's College, like the institution herself, had a small beginning and received its major thrust from the arrival in 1896 of Dr. Charles Henry Boyer, the first clack Academic Dean employed in the history of St. Augustine's College.

Dr. Boyer, one of the first black receipient of the B.A. and M.A. degrees from Yale University, organized and served as player/coach of both baseball and football around the turn of the century. He brought to St. Augustine's the Yale University colors of blue and white. The teams were initially called the "Fighting Saints".
